چکیده

In this paper we show that the introduction of an attenuation factor in the brightness equations relative to various perspective Shape-from-Shading models allows to make the corresponding differential problems well-posed. We propose a unified approach based on the theory of viscosity solutions and we show that the brightness equations with the attenuation term admit a unique viscosity solution. We also discuss in detail the possible boundary conditions that we can use for the Hamilton-Jacobi equations associated to these models.

On Learning Shapes from Shades

Shape from Shading (SFS) is one of the most extensively studied problems in Computer Vision. However, most of the approaches only deal with Lambertian or other specific shading models, and are hence limited in their applicability to real images. In this contribution we propose a general unified framework in which it is possible to incorporate different illumination and shading models. We effect...

A Non-local Approach to Shape from Ambient Shading

We study the mathematical and numerical aspects of the estimation of the 3-D shape of a Lambertian scene seen under diffuse illumination. This problem is known as “shape from ambient shading” (SFAS), and its solution consists of integrating a strongly non-local and non-linear Integro-Partial Differential Equation (I-PDE). We provide a first analysis of this global I-PDE, whereas previous work h...

Incorporating Illumination Constraints in Deformable Models for Shape from Shading and Light Direction Estimation

In this paper we present a method for the integration of nonlinear holonomic constraints in deformable models and its application to the problems of shape and illuminant direction estimation from shading. Experimental results demonstrate that our method performs better than previous Shape from Shading algorithms applied to images of Lambertian objects under known illumination. It is also more g...

Model-based shape from shading for microelectronics applications

Model-based shape from shading (SFS) is a promising paradigm introduced by Atick et al. [Neural Comput 8 (1996), 1321– 1340 ] in 1996 for solving inverse problems when we happen to have a lot of prior information on the depth profiles to be recovered. In the present work we adopt this approach to address the problem of recovering wafer profiles from images taken using a scanning electron micros...

Shape from shading using MRF optimization with Gibbs sampling with quadruplet cliques

This paper extends the MRF formulation approach developed solving the shape from shading problem. Our method extends the Gibbs sampling approach to solve an MRF formulation which characterizes the Shape from Shading (SFS) problem under Lambertian reflectance conditions (the algorithm is extensible to other lighting models). Our method uses a simpler set of energy functions (on point quadruplets...
